Jean-Michele Basquiat (1960-1988) was an artist of Haitian and Puerto-Rican descent who grew up in New York. He began as a graffiti artist before becoming one of the most famous black painters in modern times. In his short career he completed an astounding number of pieces including over 1000 paintings and more than 2000 drawings. He became a pop culture icon relaying with paint the experience of black Americans as well as their aspirations. His untitled 1982 painting sold for 110.5 million dollars which broke the record for the highest price for a US painter's work.
